A guide to medical libraries in the Cleveland area

Here's a list of some of the medical libraries and research centers in the Cleveland area that provide information, research assistance and other help to the public.

Case Western Reserve University

Allen Memorial Medical Library

Hours: 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. You must have a photo ID to enter.

Address: Second floor of the Allen Building, corner of Euclid Avenue and Adelbert Road, University Circle, Cleveland.

Special services or area of expertise: This library has a very strong clinical medicine collection, including books on surgery, radiology and psychiatry, and a strong history of medicine collection.

Case Western Reserve University

Health Center Library

Hours: 8 a.m.-midnight Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 1-9 p.m. Sunday. After 7 p.m., you must have a photo ID to enter.

Address: Robbins Building in the School of Medicine on the campus of Case Western Reserve University, 2109 Adelbert Road, University Circle, Cleveland.

Special services or area of expertise: This is the main library for Case's schools of dental medicine, medicine and nursing. It's close to University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and it includes 17 computer stations for public use.

Cleveland Clinic

Patient and Family Health and Education Center

Hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Special services or area of expertise: You can chat with a health educator online from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Cuyahoga County Public Library

All 28 branches

Hours: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday at some branches. All will be open Sunday beginning Sept. 12. The Richmond Heights branch has shorter hours until Sept. 5.

Address: You can find health information at all 28 branches, but consumer health specialist Ely Whitaker is at the Parma South branch, 7335 Ridge Road.

Special services or area of expertise: Videos on subjects such as pain and depression, teen yoga and colon cancer prevention. In addition, the library brings in speakers on topics such as coping with stress, understanding depression, Reiki and plant-based nutrition.

The Gathering Place

Libraries at both its east and west side locations

Hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, evenings when there's a program under way.

Special services or area of expertise: The focus of these libraries is on cancer and its emotional and physical aspects.

Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital

Family Resource Center

Hours: They vary, but typically they're 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday; 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday; 1-5 p.m. Sunday. But hours can vary depending on staffing, so call ahead.

Special services or area of expertise: The focus is on pediatric health and special needs related to pediatric health, but librarians can answer other questions.

Southwest General Health Center

The Visitor Library and Concierge Services

Hours: Typically 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. But it's best to call ahead.
